Sound understanding of the cement market, both globally and locally is very important. Existing trends in cement movement had to be established for deciding market entry strategy. Also study of various organizational structures across the Indian shipping companies had to be done to help client in deciding organizational structure and manpower planning.
Methodology
The market for the trade of cement is much localized and there exist regional blocks like European Gulf and Red sea region, North American block and Asia Pacific block. Indian cement trade with these blocks was understood; similarly distribution of cement manufacturers in the hinterland was mapped. Shipping dynamics of the cement carriers revealed them to be specialized vessels and commanding a premium up to 80% over normal bulk carrier rates. Other aspects like parcel size and ship sizes were analyzed in light of competition.
