Challenge
Entire logistics chain had to be mapped and evaluated for technical and economic costs. Technical difficulties involved in the transportation of coal in terms of navigational, loading and unloading aspects of the movement had to be evaluated and practical solutions identified. Solution Based on expert opinion and preliminary technical requirements, three logistics option were short listed. These involved use of different means of transportation using either domestic or imported coal. Based on the power plant coal requirement and the logistics option, ship sizes, parcel sizes and inventory was calculated. For each option, required capital investment in development of any new facilities like Jetty, rail siding, etc was evaluated. Benefits of using imported coal in terms of efficiency and environmental cost were also factored in. A detailed financial analysis of all the options was done based on various project costs and benefits. The IWT mode was found financially feasible and cheaper than the existing mode.

i-maritime compared and established technical and financial feasibility of all the three options. Recommendations were put forward based on results of financial analysis and risks. With expertise on the logistics and cargo movement, i-maritime brought various insights which helped establish cost savings at each stage of the value chain, for example, vessel related charges could be brought down by Rupees fifty per ton by reducing demurrage charges alone. i-maritime’s recommendations also included additional savings through redesign of barges.
